“Jeweller of Kings and King of Jewellers”
The Cartier story is like a true fairy tale. Their fate intertwined with royal courts, it is a story about the hard-working and creative master jeweller and his three visionary (grand)sons who wanted to enchant customers across the globe and make the family business known in the four corners of the world. Edward the VII hailed Cartier as Jeweller of Kings and King of Jewellers, the brand has established itself throughout its over 160-year history the preferred choice of royalty and celebrities alike.
Marilyn Monroe sang about Cartier in “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend”, Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier and was given an impressive 10.47-carat emerald-cut diamond to seal his eternal love for her and lately it was “Duchess of Cambridge”-to-be Kate Middleton who wowed the crowds at her wedding to Prince William wearing the Cartier “Halo” tiara.

Once upon a time in a jewellery workshop in a hidden corner of Paris, a young Louis-François Cartier was watching his master’s every move, acquiring the skills needed to become a master jeweller. In 1847 he took over the company and created some of the Cartier’s most celebrated designs from “mystery clocks” to exotic art Deco designs and the very first wristwatch for men. In the era of the pocket watch when wristwatches were seen by many as a time piece solely for women Louis-Francois Cartier created the “Santos”, named after pilot and his good friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted to tell time without letting go of the controls of his flying machine.

Cartier's grandsons Louis, Pierre and Jacques took the family business over with their sight firmly set abroad. Jacques who ventured into foggy London opening a boutique on New Bond Street 1909, while Louis stayed in Paris to manage the headquarter shop. Pierre moved to New York to run the American branch, which became a favourite with rich industrialists and Hollywood celebrities alike.
