Formerly known as Yves Saint Laurent, the luxury fashion house designing and producing ready-to-wear clothing and fashion accessories was for men and women founded by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in 1961 and been rebranded as Saint Laurent in 2013.
Yves Saint Laurent was a man of paradox, being responsible for many controversial changes in the fashion world: from popularising the ready-to-wear culture as a whole or putting tuxedo suits on women creating the famous Le Smoking look to being the first to have black models in his catwalk shows. The French designer – previously heading the house of Christian Dior – has not only built a groundbreaking fashion empire but left his mark on the whole fashion world provoking both adoration and outrage. “If Chanel liberated women, Yves liberated fashion,” noted one commentator, while his muse and big fan Catherine Deneuve said: “he designes for women who lead double lives”.
The Eyewear Collections
The first collection of YSL eyewear launched in 2002 under Tom Ford’s direction. Saint Laurent glasses and sunglasses are designed separately for men and women but some models are being released in unisex style.
Sophistication and style are at the core of Saint Laurent glasses. With the first collections of YSL glasses favouring the classic chic of black and tried-and-true neutral tones, new models include exclusive colours: pearlescent hues, animalier patterns and tortoise print are just a few of the countless options. The stylish signs decorating the temples are typical for products of the house of Saint Laurent with all the logos being designed individually for each and every eyewear model. The most outstanding feature of Saint Laurent glasses are their unique shape: ranging from the classic square and round ones to oval and triangular shapes. YSL eyewear is the go-to brand if you’re looking for a popular yet individual interpretation of cat eye, wayfarer or butterfly styles.
YSL and Celebrities
Saint Laurent glasses and sunglasses are favoured by many celebrities: Angelina Jolie, Diane Krueger, Eva Longoria, Katie Holmes or pop princesses Kylie Minogue and Britney Spears have all been seen out and about sporting YSL. Rapper Kanye West even mentioned his YSL shades in the lyrics of his song Diamonds From Sierra Leone: “Close your eyes and imagine, feel the magic, Vegas on acid, Seen through Yves Saint Laurent glasses”.
